VI.16 LE CHEVAL ET L’ÂNE

En ce monde il se faut l'un l'autre secourir.
Si ton voisin vient à mourir,
C'est sur toi que le fardeau tombe.
Un Âne accompagnait un Cheval peu courtois, Celui-ci ne portant que son simple harnois,
Et le pauvre Baudet si chargé qu'il succombe.
Il pria le Cheval de l'aider quelque peu : Autrement il mourrait devant qu'être à la ville.
« La prière, dit-il, n'en est pas incivile :
Moitié de ce fardeau ne vous sera que jeu. »
Le Cheval refusa, fit une pétarade :
Tant qu'il vit sous le faix mourir son camarade,
Et reconnut qu'il avait tort.
Du Baudet, en cette aventure,
On lui fit porter la voiture,
Et la peau par-dessus encor.
VI.16 THE HORSE AND THE DONKEY

In this world, we must help one another.
If your neighbor happens to die,
The burden falls upon you.
An ass accompanied a discourteous horse,
The horse carrying only its simple harness,
While the poor donkey was burdened to the point of collapse.
He asked the horse to help him a little:
Otherwise, he would die before reaching the town.
"The request," he said, "is not impolite:
Half of this burden will be but a game for you."
The horse refused, kicked up its heels,
Until it saw its companion die under the load,
And realized it was wrong.
In this adventure, the burden was made for the donkey to carry,
And even the skin on top.
VI.16 DAS PFERD UND DER ESEL

In dieser Welt müssen wir einander helfen.
Wenn dein Nachbar stirbt,
liegt die Last auf dir.
Ein Esel begleitete ein unhöfliches Pferd,
Das Pferd trug nur sein einfaches Geschirr,
Während der arme Esel so beladen war, dass er zusammenbrach.
Er bat das Pferd um etwas Hilfe:
Sonst würde er sterben, bevor er die Stadt erreichte.
"Die Bitte", sagte er, "ist nicht unhöflich:
Die Hälfte dieser Last wird für dich nur ein Spiel sein."
Das Pferd lehnte ab, buckelte und trat aus,
Bis es sah, wie sein Begleiter unter der Last starb,
Und erkannte, dass es im Unrecht war.
In diesem Abenteuer war es der Esel, der die Last tragen musste,
Und sogar die Haut obendrauf.
