Ton bras peut me tirer d'ici. »

VI.18 THE CARTER STUCK IN THE MUD

Jean de La Fontaine - Fables

The Phaeton of a hay cart
saw his chariot stuck in the mud.
The poor man was far
from any human help. It was in the countryside,
near a certain corner of Lower Brittany
called Quimper-Corentin.
It is well known that Fate
sends people there when it wants to make them mad.
God save us from such a journey!

To reach the stuck cart in these places,
he curses and swears with all his might,
ranting in his extreme fury
against the potholes, then against his horses,
against his chariot, against himself.
Finally, he invokes the God whose labors
are so famous in the world:
"Hercules," he says, "help me; if your back
has borne the round machine,
your arm can pull me out of here."
After his prayer, he hears a voice in the clouds
speaking to him thus:
"Hercules wants people to make an effort,
then he helps them. Look where
the stumbling block that holds you back comes from.
Remove from around each wheel
that wretched mortar, that cursed mud
that coats them up to the axle.
Take your pickaxe and break that troublesome rock for me.
Fill in that rut. Have you done it?" "Yes," says the man.
"Well, now I'll help you," says the voice. "Take your whip."
"I have taken it. What is this? My chariot moves as desired.
Praise be to Hercules." Then the voice says,
"You see how easily your horses got out of there.
Help yourself, and Heaven will help you."

tobend in seiner äußersten Wut
"Nimm deine Peitsche."
"Ich habe sie genommen. Was ist das? Mein Wagen bewegt sich wie gewünscht.
Gelobt sei Herkules."
