II.10 L’ÂNE CHARGE D’EPONGES ET L’ÂNE CHARGE DE SEL

Jean de La Fontaine - Fables

Un Ânier, son sceptre à la main,
Menait, en empereur romain,
Deux coursiers à longues oreilles.
L'un d'éponges chargé, marchait comme un courrier ;

Revint sur l'eau, puis échappa ;
Quelqu'un vint au secours : qui ce fut, il n'importe ;
C'est assez qu'on ait vu par là qu'il ne faut point
Agir chacun de même sorte.
J'en voulais venir à ce point.

II.10 THE DONKEY LOADED WITH SPONGES AND THE DONKEY LOADED WITH SALT

Jean de La Fontaine - Fables

An Ass-driver, scepter in hand,
Led, like a Roman emperor grand,
Two long-eared steeds of his dominion.
One, loaded with sponges, sped like a courier,
And the other, being begged and prayed to carry,
Bore, as they say, the bottles: his mission: To transport a load of salt. Our merry pilgrims,
Through mountains, valleys, and winding ways,
At last arrived at a river's ford,
And found themselves greatly perplexed.

The Ass-driver, who daily crossed that ford,
Mounted the Sponge-laden Ass,
Driving the other beast before him,
Who, seeking to have his own way,
Plunged into a hole,
Rose up in the water, then escaped;
For after a few strokes,
All his salt dissolved so completely
That the Donkey felt no burden
Relieved of his shoulders.
The Sponge-carrier comrade followed his example,
Like a sheep that follows blindly the faith of others.
Behold, my Ass in the water, up to his neck he plunges,
He, the leader, and the sponge.
All three drank their fill: the Ass-driver and the Grey,
Both made use of the sponge.
It became so heavy,
Filled with so much water at once,
That the Ass, succumbing, could not reach the bank.
The Ass-driver embraced him, awaiting
A prompt and certain death.
Someone came to the rescue: who it was doesn't matter;
It is enough that we have seen from this
That one should not act in the same manner.
That was the point I wanted to make.

II.10 DER ESEL BELADEN MIT SCHWÄMMEN UND DER ESEL BELADEN MIT SALZ

Jean de La Fontaine - Fabeln

Ein Eseltreiber, Zepter in der Hand,
führte wie ein großer römischer Kaiser
zwei Langohren aus seiner Herrschaft.
Der eine, beladen mit Schwämmen, lief wie ein Kurier;

wieder auf das Wasser kam und entkam;
beide machten Gebrauch vom Schwamm.
Jemand kam zur Rettung: wer es war, spielt keine Rolle;
