V.5 LE RENARD AYANT LA QUEUE COUPÉE
Jean de La Fontaine - Fables
Un vieux Renard, mais des plus fins,
Grand croqueur de poulets, grand preneur de lapins,
Sentant son Renard d'une lieue,
Fut enfin au piège attrapé.
Par grand hasard en étant échappé,
Non pas franc, car pour gage il y laissa sa queue ;
Si l'on me croit, chacun s'y résoudra.
— Votre avis est fort bon, dit quelqu'un de la troupe ;
Que le pauvre écourté ne put être entendu. Prétendre ôter la queue eût été temps perdu ;
La mode en fut continuée.
V.5 THE FOX WITH THE CUT-OFF TAIL
Jean de La Fontaine - Fables
A cunning old Fox,
A great chicken snatcher, a great rabbit catcher,
Feeling his Foxness from a mile away,
Was finally caught in a trap.
By great chance, he escaped from it,
Not completely, as he left his tail as a pledge;
Having, I say, saved himself without a tail, and feeling ashamed,
For being so clever, one day, when the Foxes held a council among themselves:
"What shall we do," he said, "with this useless burden,
That sweeps through all the muddy paths? What good is this tail? We must cut it off:
If you believe me, everyone will resolve to do so.
Your advice is very good," someone from the group said,
"But please turn around, and we will respond to you."
At these words, such a jeering noise arose
That the poor shortened one couldn't be heard.
To claim to remove the tail would have been a waste of time;
The fashion continued.
V.5 DER FUCHS MIT DEM ABGESCHNITTENEN SCHWAN
Jean de La Fontaine - Fabeln
Ein schlauer alter Fuchs,
Ein großer Hühnerfänger, ein großer Kaninchenjäger,
Der seine Fuchsheit schon von weitem spürte,
Wurde schließlich in eine Falle gelockt.
Durch großes Glück konnte er entkommen,
Nicht ganz, denn er ließ seinen Schwanz als Pfand zurück;
Was nützt uns dieser Schwanz?
Zu behaupten, den Schwanz abzuschneiden, wäre Zeitverschwendung gewesen;
Die Mode wurde fortgesetzt.
