Le premier qui vit un Chameau
S'enfuit à cet objet nouveau ;
Le second approcha ; le troisième osa faire
Un licou pour le Dromadaire. L'accoutumance ainsi nous rend tout familier. Ce qui nous paraissait terrible et singulier
S'apprivoise avec notre vue,
Quand ce vient à la continue.
Et puisque nous voici tombés sur ce sujet,
On avait mis des gens au guet,
Qui voyant sur les eaux de loin certain objet,
Ne purent s'empêcher de dire
Que c'était un puissant navire.
Quelques moments après, l'objet devint brûlot,
Et puis nacelle, et puis ballot,
Enfin bâtons flottants sur l'onde.
J'en sais beaucoup de par le monde
A qui ceci conviendrait bien :
De loin c'est quelque chose, et de près, ce n'est rien.
IV.10 THE CAMEL AND THE FLOATING STICKS

The first one who saw a Camel
Fled from this new object;
The second approached; the third dared
To make a halter for the Dromedary.
Habituation thus makes everything familiar.
What seemed terrible and singular to us
Becomes tamed by our sight,
When it continues.
And since we have fallen upon this subject,
People were put on guard,
Who, seeing in the distance a certain object on the waters,
Could not help but say
That it was a powerful ship.
A few moments later, the object turned into a burning wreckage,
And then a boat, and then floating sticks on the wave.
I know many people in the world
To whom this would suit well:
From afar, it is something, and up close, it is nothing.
IV.10 DAS KAMEL UND DIE SCHWIMMENDEN STÖCKE

Der erste, der ein Kamel sah,
Floh vor diesem neuen Objekt;
Der zweite näherte sich; der dritte wagte es,
Ein Halfter für das Dromedar zu machen.
Die Gewohnheit macht uns alles vertraut.
Was uns schrecklich und seltsam erschien,
Wird durch unseren Anblick zähmbar,
Wenn es sich fortsetzt.
Und da wir gerade dieses Thema angesprochen haben,
Wurden Leute zum Wachen abgestellt,
Die, als sie in der Ferne etwas auf dem Wasser sahen,
Nicht umhin konnten zu sagen,
Dass es ein mächtiges Schiff sei.
Einige Augenblicke später wurde das Objekt zu einem brennenden Wrack,
Dann zu einem Boot und dann zu Treibholz auf den Wellen.
Ich kenne viele Menschen auf der Welt,
Auf die dies gut passen würde:
Aus der Ferne ist es etwas, aus der Nähe ist es nichts.
